The story

An elegance that never returned

When Auto Union unveiled the 1000 SP in 1958, it was quickly nicknamed the “Baby Thunderbird” – its lines quote the famous Ford. While 5,004 coupés were made, only 1,640 open roadsters were built between 1961 and 1965. It was the marque's last convertible; the next open car to wear the four rings arrived only in 1992.

This 1961 example – never crashed, bought in Germany as a complete, all-original car – was restored to the last bolt between 2012 and 2014 and has been certified historically original: engine, gearbox, body and chassis all match factory specification.

Since the restoration we have taken the car to the classic rally in Karlovy Vary every year and enjoyed drives through the surrounding countryside. It is kept in a garage with air circulation and is completely free of corrosion. We are selling for one reason only: with a growing family and frequent travel, we no longer have the time this hobby deserves. We are looking for an owner who will carry that care forward.
